Hardwood Floors

What is interesting about hardwood flooring? Maybe a person who doesn’t know about wood is the one who would throw a question like this.

Wood flooring has existed from four centuries ago in European countries. Although, during those days only those of noble and royal families got to use wood as their house floorings, commoners were longing to set foot in a house with wood on their feet instead of rotten earth.

But in North America since there is an abundance of wood, common use of wood floorings made its people enjoyed the warmth of wood during the colonial era. Until now, homeowners highly revered wood flooring. The warmth it gives even during winter, there is only few can match.

Let us look at what interest people with this wood flooring:

1. Its characteristic to expand and contract.

As it a product of nature, wood flooring will expands with high moisture content in the air and expands when there is low relative humidity. Because of this characteristic, flooring must be installed with appropriate spacing so that when the floor boards will expand and, it has space. Without appropriate spacing, the floorboards will buckle and might need to be reinstalled.

2. Tougher than other materials

Softwood may be soft as they are but not of what you think as what the word means. If there are softwoods, there are also hardwood flooring species like Brazilian walnut, Ebony, Brazilian teak and Brazilian cherry which are the top 4 in the Janka hardness scale with 3000 plus scales. These wood species that are used for flooring are tougher than the most durable flooring even ceramic tile and even cement. Unlike wood, ceramic tile will chip off and crack when hard material fall into it.

3. Not all types of wood floorings are 100 percent composed of solid wood.

Some engineered wood also known as structural composite lumber or SCL is a kind of wood which its composition is not made of solid hardwood rather made from waste of wood product like wood chips, strands and wood flakes that are bound together with adhesive. There are even types that composed of vegetable fibers.

Laminate wood is infused with melamine paper on top and the bottom is composed of wood chips. Plywood is composed of real wood, although not solid, as it is made of thin layers of wood laid across each other with a finished top wood and an unfinished bottom wood.

4. Flooded wood flooring can still be saved.

We know that water is the best enemy of wood because it will make the wood expand and swell over time. But flooded hardwood flooring can still be saved. This reclaimed wood floor boards can even be made into some kind of distressed or hand scraped wood flooring that would look like an antique floor.

5. A board can be replaced if damaged

Few homeowners prefer to call an installer rather than doing it themselves. Cracks and splits on wood floors are unavoidable but replacing it can be so simple. You can do it or call a professional.

6. Installing wood floor inlay is possible.

Someone might like to make an eye-catching sight on their floor. Installing wood floor inlay in hardwood floor is a nice idea since an inlay gives a dramatic look in a floor with its many varieties of design a client can choose from.
